3 Liqueurs That Will Give Traditional Cocktails a Twist

Some of the most famous drinks are also the most simple, like gin and tonic, or rum and cola. But that doesn't mean that you can't enhance these classic cocktail combinations by adding a splash of liqueur. Consider these using these three liqueurs in your frozen concoction maker to make party drinks out of the ordinary.

1. Agave Sec
To make a standard margarita, you need tequila, which is made from agave, and triple sec, an orange-flavored liqueur. So, a few bartenders decided to take this classic recipe into their own hands years ago and added agave syrup.

Now the company Giffard sells an agave-triple sec combination liqueur that keeps that spiced, orange flavor people love, as well as high alcohol content and agave syrup that meshes perfectly with tequila called Agave Sec. Add it to the next batch of margaritas you blend in your frozen concoction maker.

Invest in these liqueurs for your home bar.

2. Campari
This well-known liqueur has a unique taste that's simultaneously sweet, spicy and bitter. Although the recipe changed in 2006, to no longer include crushed insects, it's distinctive taste has remained. Feel free to experiment with this Italian liqueur in your cocktails or to adapt a Campari favorite, like the negroni, for your party machine. Serve a slushie version of this European treat on a hot day.

3. Curaçao
This simple citrus liqueur is popular for its strong but understated flavor as well as its blue color. Although, you don't need to get the blue version, it helps make more cocktails feel more tropical.

Consider adding this liqueur to a cocktail in the place of a splash of lime, orange juice or lemon. Or use it to add a dash of color to make your drink look like the clear blue Caribbean Sea. Try it in your margaritas for an alcoholic boost and stronger citrus flavor. It works with cosmopolitans as well.
