Frozen Versions of 6 Classic Drinks

At the next party you throw, make your guests some of the most popular classic drinks of all time. However, rather than serving these cocktails warm, put a modern twist on them by blending them into frozen concoctions. Follow these six recipes for making your own ice cold classics. 

1. Old Fashioned 
The classic cocktail has recently become popular again as specialty bars and distilleries produce new versions of this American staple. The Old Fashioned, for which rocks glasses  are named, was one of the first cocktails ever created, hence the name. Although it's old, it still tastes as good as ever. Trying making a frozen version of this staple with: 

  • 4.5 ounces whiskey, rye or bourbon
  • 2 splashes water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar 
  • 2 dashes bitters.

Fill up your frozen concoction maker's ice reservoir and combine these ingredients in your machine's blender jar. Pour into an old fashioned glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry, an orange wedge and a lemon wedge.

2. Sazerac 
Sazerac is another of Americas oldest and most beloved cocktails. Although it isn't as common as it likely once was, it still has a small following, particularly in the New Orleans area. Try making your own version of Sazerac for your get-together, just be sure to brush up on the drink's history before you serve it. Simply combine these ingredients in your margarita along with plenty of ice: 

  • 4.5 ounces cognac 
  • 1.5 ounces absinthe or anisette
  • 1 teaspoon sugar 
  • 2 dashes bitters. 

3. Gin Fizz 
Simple, tasty and easy to make - the Gin Fizz is a great, light cocktail that you can make in your margarita maker. All you have to do is combine these ingredients in your party machine's blender jar: 

  • 3 ounces gin
  • 1.5 ounces lemon juice 
  • 1.5 ounces simple syrup 
  • 9 ounces club soda. 

Make sure you have plenty of ice, pour in your ingredients then just flip the switch and blend up your drink. It's a very old recipe, but it still gets the job done. Enjoy in a tall glass. Some variations include egg white or plum-flavored alcohol as well. 

4. Manhattan 
Named for the densely populated New York City borough, the Manhattan is a classic, quality cocktail that's enjoyed all over. Try the creative frozen take on this drink: 

  • 4.5 ounces whiskey 
  • 1.5 ounces sweet vermouth 
  • 2 dashes bitters 
  • 1 splash of water
  • Cherries
  • Ice. 

Typically a Manhattan is served straight, without ice in a martini glass. However, since you're freezing it, consider mixing the traditional garnish - cherries - directly in with the rest of the drink. Just pour the whiskey, vermouth, bitters and cherries all into the margarita machine and blend it together.

5. Cuba Libre 
This simple tropical cocktail is the perfect drink for a Caribbean-themed party and a great complement to Mojitos and Daiquiris. All you need to do is combine these ingredients in your frozen concoction maker: 

  • 12 ounces cola 
  • 4.5 ounces white rum 
  • 1.5 ounces fresh-squeezed lime juice. 

Fill up your ice compartment and let your machine do the rest. Serve in a tall glass with lime and cherry garnishes. 

6. Screwdriver 
There may not be any cocktails simpler than a screwdriver, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved by some ice. Make this easy-to-make drink stick out by blending it in your margarita maker. Here's what you need: 

  • 1 part vodka
  • 2 parts orange juice 
  • 1 splash lime juice 
  • Ice. 

Just load up the ice hopper and mix your cocktail to size. Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!
