Why You Need Bitters in Your Home Bar
If you have a home bar to go alongside your frozen concoction maker, you should make sure you have bitters. Although you may not know a lot about these little bottles of flavoring, they can go a long way into making unique and delicious frozen drinks.
What are Bitters?
Bitters are a key ingredient in classic cocktails, such as an Old Fashioned, as well as many other ones. Contrary to their name, these substances typically aren't actually even bitter.
Bitters are a high-proof alcohol that's been mixed with a substance to create a strong flavor. Typically combined with herbs, fruit or seeds, bitters will add a little jolt of a unique flavor to your drink. They come in small bottles and you won't need much to see a big impact on the flavor of your drink.
There are a number of types of bitters that have different flavors and are used in classic cocktails. Check out these varieties:
- Peychaud's Bitters - Used in the Southern staple, Sazerac, these red bitters are used for a number of modern specialty drinks.
- Aromatic Bitters - Used in Old Fashioneds and Manhattans, this flavor of bitters has a strong cinnamon taste and is made with a number of other ingredients including nutmeg.
- Orange Bitters - These bitters have the cinnamon flavor of aromatic bitters as well as a much stronger citrus touch.
- Other flavors - In addition to these common bitters, there are also fruity and spicy varieties you may be able to find a liquor store for a truly unique flavor.
Why do You Need Bitters?
Bitters have been a staple at bars for such a long time because they really can impact the flavor of your drink in a small portion. Just a drop or two of bitters can give your drink a richer flavor without overloading it with mixers that can be cumbersome and filled with calories.
You can use bitters to put a twist on established cocktails, like a frozen iced tea, or to create a completely original drink. It's a great option for amateur bartenders as well as curious Parrotheads.
Bitters are particularly good with Whiskey, bourbon, scotch and other dark liquors, but feel free to try them with any drinks in your frozen concoction maker.
Your fellow Parrotheads at Margaritaville® Cargo remind you to enjoy your frozen concoctions responsibly and obey all drinking laws.
