Try This Simple DIY Sour Mix Recipe

Next time you want to whip up a tropical concoction or classic cocktail for your fellow Parrotheads, make it truly custom by creating your own sour mix.

What you'll need 

  • Lemons
  • Limes
  • An orange
  • Water 
  • Sugar 
  • A resealable container 

Make sour mix 
Start off by cutting up your citrus fruits and juicing them. Whether you squeeze them, use a manual juicer or a machine, you'll want end up with about a cup of lime juice, a cup of lemon juice and 1/8 of a cup of orange juice. You can adjust these ratios to taste, and feel free to customize this citrus mix by switching out your orange for a bit of grapefruit. 

Next, add your juices into the container and combine them with 1 1/2 cup of heated water and 1 cup of sugar. Stir your mix thoroughly and refrigerate until cold. Now you're ready to play bartender. 

Fresh lemons and limes allow DIY sour mixes to enhance any cocktail.

Depending on how much fresh sour mix you want, you can update the recipe accordingly. This is a medium-sized batch, but you can use the same ratio to make plenty for the whole party. However, because it has fresh juice, this sour mix only lasts for a few days and needs to be refrigerated.

Sour mix is an ingredient in many cocktails because its tart and sweet taste helps take the bite away from booze while creating a better drink. Try your homemade sour mix in one of these great classic cocktails. 

  • The Best Margarita - Use your DIY sour mix to enhance a classic margarita. Just add the sour mix instead of lime juice and orange juice to your frozen concoction maker's blender jar for a more sweet and sour experience. 
  • Whiskey Sour - All you'll need is ice, whiskey, sour mix and garnish for this simple cocktail. Fill an old fashioned glass with ice, pour in 1 1/2 ounces whiskey or bourbon, and 3 ounces of sour mix. Stir and serve with a maraschino cherry. 
  • Long Island Iced Tea - Many people stick to ordering this drink at the bar due to the number of ingredients, but if you have a stocked bar and your sour mix, you'll be able to serve these up. Fill up a highball glass with ice and add 1 shot of each: tequila, vodka, gin and white rum. Then add two shots or 3 ounces of sour mix, 1/2 ounce of triple sec and splash of cola to fill the glass.
